February is International Friendship Month. It is celebrated every February, every year. This is a great opportunity to enforce feelings of happiness and kindness towards others. Children are naturally kind hearted, so this is a great opportunity to mold them into friendly adults.
This month is a time to recognize that mutual knowledge, affection, esteem, and respect and the provision of service to friends in times of need or crisis. To have friends, you should be a friend. Friendship is not unilateral like a contract with a credit card company who just wants you to think they're your friend. Friendship is a colorful state of being with ups and downs and it's the truest condition being specified as blue. Show some sympathy or empathy if it's indicated.
Friends are crucial to your overall emotional and physical health. Having friends gives you someone to talk to and turn to when you need someone to talk to. Friendship Month is a great day to let your friends know how much they are needed and loved. The absolute best way to celebrate Friendship Month would be to spend the day in a way that your closest friends would enjoy. You should do something new, fun and creative.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui's mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Volunteers who are Big Brothers and Big Sisters are people who decide to share some magical moments with a Little Brother or Little Sister. This relationship is based on friendship, guidance and support through mentoring. The act of sharing time is the most important gift from a Big Brother or Big Sister. The “Bigs” and “Littles” enjoy playing sports, seeing movies, going over schoolwork, washing the car, taking walks, volunteering in their communities, or just hanging out. Many activities are set according to the volunteer and child's schedules.
Researchers found that after 18 months of spending time with their Bigs, the Little Brothers and Little Sisters were:
- 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
- 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
- 52% less likely to skip school
- 37% less likely to skip a class
- more confident of their performance in schoolwork
- one-third less likely to hit someone
- getting along better with their families
