Day 87: Forgive Mom and Dad Day

Is there a parent alive who has not made mistakes? It’s time to let Mom and Dad down off the wedding cake and into the world of mere humans. Besides, you’re an alleged grown-up now, and it’s time to stop living your life as a reaction to what used to be.

Today is a special holiday, a day many moms and dads may have looked forward to. It is the day they expect their children to forgive them for the many mistakes they have made, the harsh words they have spoken and in some cases the abuse they have dealt.

Young children are very humble. When they are corrected they don’t hold a grudge. Even while they cry, they want to be held by their parents. However, as they grow older they lose that humility and begin to be resentful.

Today is Forgive Mom & Dad Day. Do you need to forgive your parents? Many times as adults we continue to blame our parents for things we felt they did to us as children or how we turned out.  But at some point in our lives healthy individuals recognize that we have to take responsibility for our own lives and no longer blame others. Most parents do the best they can, raising their children. Parenthood doesn’t come with an instruction manual and usually we imitate the behavior of our own parents. Dysfunction and bad behavior is passed down. But it doesn’t have to be that way and mature adults recognize the value of forgiveness.

We can honor our parents even if we don’t necessarily like them. Forgiveness is never easy but it is a behavior we can cultivate and it is always worth the effort. One way to honor them is to be available for those who have lost their parents whether they made mistakes or not. Many children don’t have parents.

The mission of Orphanage Outreach is to transform individuals, families, communities, and countries through the education and development of orphaned, abandoned, and disadvantaged children. As they release the hero within these children, they release the hero within each person involved with Orphanage Outreach.

Hundreds of thousands of Latin American children are orphaned, abandoned, or financially disadvantaged. Although filled with personality and basic abilities and talents, these children do not have the same educational and development opportunities American and Canadian children have, or even the same opportunities as the wealthier children in their own countries--their competition for future jobs. As these disadvantaged children are provided educational and development opportunities and their lives are transformed, the lives of their families, communities, and countries are also transformed.
