Day 88: Perigee of the Moon

Apogee and perigee refer to the distance from the Earth to the moon. Apogee is the furthest point from the earth. Perigee is the closest point to the earth and it is in this stage that the moon appears larger. Looking at the moon in the sky without anything to compare it to, you wouldn't notice any size difference. But the difference in size can in fact be quite significant.

Astronomers have formulas for computing the exact distance at any point in time, but the average distance from Earth is 237,700 miles (382,500 km).

The apogee and perigee of the moon have an affect on the tides here on Earth. When the moon is at apogee, the furthest distance from the Earth, it has less gravitational pull which, along with other factors that influence the tides, can contribute to lower tides or lower variation in the high/low tide level. When the moon is at perigee, closer to the Earth, there is much more gravitational pull, which contributes to the opposite effect: higher tides or greater variation in the high and low tide.

Research shows that many elementary teachers have low self-confidence in teaching science, spend less time teaching science than other subjects, use text-based approaches and are weak in science pedagogy.

To address these issues in a positive manner, the Education Foundation created two workshops initiatives - "Science Fiction: Teaching Chemistry with Children's Literature" and "Science Fiction: Teaching Physics with Children's Literature"

The Education Foundation of Harris County (EFHC) supports innovative educational initiatives and out-of-school time programs benefiting students and teachers. Recognized by the IRS as a 501c(3) public charity, the Education Foundation was chartered in 1994 in partnership with the Harris County Department of Education. EFHC's mission promotes its vision that every child can learn and succeed given opportunity and education.

The EcoBot Challenge is a workforce development competition with judged engineering and marketing components. 4-person student teams build and learn to program autonomous robots to accomplish tasks related to energy generation, environmental awareness and real-world workforce opportunities. The Challenge reinforces the applicability of school-time learning and shows students how improving and adding to their skills can help them lead productive lives. The Challenge opens students’ minds to futures in our region’s industries and accelerates networking to the advantage of future generations.
