Day 13: Drinking Straw Day

Happy Drinking Straw Day everyone!

Can you actually believe there is a day dedicated to the drinking straw?  Marvin C. Stone, being invented on January 3, patented the modern drinking straw in 1888. Today, straws are made of plastic, and include bendy straws, candy straws, and spoon straws too. Then there’s the fun twirling straws. There's lots of fun in drinking out of a fun straw.  Give it a try!  On Drinking Straw Day we are encouraged to celebrate the invention of the drinking straw. So enjoy this day by drinking cool drinks with cool straws all day long!

When I think of drinking straws, who comes to my mind first are kids. Where would you find more kids using straws the most? Most likely children who are in hospitals. They would need them to consume liquids because of their illness keeping them restricted to their bed and often on their backs. Do they get to use the fun straws or given the generic ones? Most likely a flex or bendy straw would be most commonly used.

Today’s donation goes to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. St. Jude is unlike any other pediatric treatment and research facility. Discoveries made here have completely changed how the world treats children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. With research and patient care under one roof, St. Jude is where some of today's most gifted researchers are able to do science more quickly.
