Day 16: National Poverty in America Month

“We call upon all in our nation to address the issues that impact the most vulnerable and act now to reduce poverty in our nation.” Catholic Charities USA

Poverty in America not only affects the millions of people who are deprived of the common necessities to live, but it also affects the idea of progression and hopefulness in this country. The more than 37 million people in America living in squalor, poverty, and hunger are not invisible.

Many American families suffer from the plight of poverty; they don’t have enough food to feed their family, enough heat to keep themselves warm, they live without healthcare etc. All these tragedies are compiled into an overwhelming amount of personal and financial misfortune. Unfortunately, the people who suffer the most are our children; one in six children lives in poverty in America. During National Poverty in America Awareness Month, non-profit organizations, businesses, and individuals alike come together to combat poverty.

“We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty.” –Mother Teresa

Catholic Charities USA’s The Campaign to Reduce Poverty in America is a multi-year, multi-faceted approach to alleviating poverty in the United States. The goals of The Campaign to Reduce Poverty in America are:
  • To reduce poverty in the United States by 50 percent by the year 2020.
  • To call upon the government to do more to serve those who are poor, and to improve public policies that strengthen and support families.
  • To educate policymakers and the public about the struggles of those living in poverty and the good work of those who serve them in local communities.
  • To engage those who are most impacted by government policies to be active participants in developing solutions to reducing poverty.
  • To work with individuals and organizations across the country to address poverty in our country.
